BRIAN CONTRIBUTES PHOTOS TO "EXPLORERS OF THE UNIVERSE" EXIBITITION

24 Sep 2009

Brian has contributed some photographs to a new exhibition, opening tomorrow at The Royal Albert Hall, and running through to 2 November 2009.

Event: Max Alexander Photographic Exhibition - Explorers of the Universe
Dates: 24 Sept - 2 Nov
Venue: Royal Albert Hall, London

If you are attending any events at the Albert Hall in the next few weeks, take a look around in the lobby areas.  Yesterday we assembled some Stereoscopic Viewing Cabinets in the lobby of the Main Entrance, which we're lending to the Albert Hall, as part of Max Alexander's current Photographic exhibition, "Explorers of the Universe".

It's a really interesting exhibition - Max has some insightful and often witty ways of depicting various Astronomers (including me, strangely enough, which is how I got involved).  Max is now a convert to Stereoscopy, and the cabinets have, inside, some nice Astro 3-D images which I've compiled, mainly from other people's photographs.  Here's the stereo image which Max took of me, dressed up in me Sunday Best.  Later I'll show you one I took of him !!

Cheers

Brian May - Royal Albert Hall Photo Exhibition

To celebrate the International Year of Astronomy and as part of the Hall's reflect series, Explorers of the Universe is a selection of photographs by Max Alexander, portraying all aspects of astronomy in the UK.

Through interpretive and character portraits, Max introduces us to the astronomers at the forefront of our understanding of the cosmos. This is complemented by reportage photography of professional and amateur astronomy. These photographs range from academic research and observation through to the stargazing public, capturing the truly amazing journey of discovery on which both scientists and the public are travelling.

Max Alexander is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and has had a lifelong interest in astronomy. In the course of taking these photographs across the UK, he has got to know very well the community of astronomers, in one of the few sciences where amateurs make a valuable contribution.

On Sunday 4th October at 5pm there will be a talk by Professor John Zarnecki, a leading figure in astronomy. Entitled Explorers of the Solar System, he gives us an engaging personal account of his experiences exploring the far reaches of the Solar System. This will be followed by a private view of the exhibition. Tickets are £6.50 and include a glass of wine. It is also possible to add a short tour of the building at 4.30pm for an additional £3.50. To book, please call the Box Office or click here.

This exhibition is kindly supported by the Science and Technology Facilities Council and the Royal Astronomical Society.

Free open days:
Saturday 3 October 10am-2pm
Saturday 10 October 10am-2pm
Wednesday 14 October 6pm-9pm
